Thousands up for grabs as Beam marks E-scooter ‘Helmet Safety Awareness Week’
  • Beam to reward riders for wearing helmets with discounts and incentives
  • Take a helmet selfie for discounted rides and entry into a $500 prize draw
  • Safety Ambassadors will be out rewarding riders and enforcing safe riding rules
  • Helmets prevent serious head and neck injuries and are mandatory across Australia

Australia, 22 September, 2025  – Leading e-scooter operator Beam Mobility is marking this year’s annual Helmet Safety Awareness Week from 22 to 28 September, reinforcing its long-term commitment to safer riding. The campaign will see Beam give away thousands in free rides and rewards to riders who wear helmets and pledge to protect their heads.

This year’s campaign comes with a simple message: “Wear a helmet, snap a selfie, and scoot safe.”

For the duration of the campaign, riders will have the opportunity to:

  • Snap a selfie to earn rewards: Riders who snap an in-app selfie of them wearing a helmet will earn up to 50 cents off each trip.
  • Get spotted: Beam’s Safety Ambassadors will be out during the week, rewarding helmet-wearers, providing safety tips and enforcing the rules.
  • Win big: Anyone who takes a helmet selfie or completes a safety briefing will go into a draw to win $500 to spend on a restaurant or city break.

Helmets remain the single most important piece of safety equipment for riders. Global research consistently shows the vast majority of serious e-scooter injuries affect the head and neck, and wearing a helmet is the number one way to prevent serious injury.

In Australia, wearing a helmet is mandatory by law, and those caught riding without one face police prosecution and heavy fines:

  • Victoria – $395
  • New South Wales - $423
  • Queensland – $166
  • South Australia – $125
  • Tasmania – $410
  • Western Australia – $50

Beam also enforces compliance directly, and if their Safety Ambassadors or patrollers witness riders not wearing a helmet, the offenders will be warned, with repeat offenders banned from the service. In addition, riders who fail to return their helmets at the end of a trip will be charged a replacement fee.

To make compliance as easy as possible, every Beam e-scooter comes equipped with a helmet secured by an app-controlled Helmet Lock, which releases it electronically at the start of each booking.

Beam’s Safety Ambassadors will also be out at popular riding hotspots during the week to remind users of the rules and encourage helmet use.

Ross Vinten, Chief of Staff for Beam Mobility, said:

"We’re excited to be part of this year’s Helmet Safety Awareness Week. While almost all of Beam's trips end safely, we all have a role to play in reducing risks wherever possible. Every Beam e-scooter comes with a helmet, and wearing one can make a big difference in the rare event of an accident. That’s why we’re encouraging riders to wear a helmet, use our in-app ‘helmet selfie’, and get rewarded for riding safely."
