Beam Mobility Celebrates 5th Year Anniversary in Malaysia

  • Beam has expanded to 8 cities and 24 universities with over 5,500 fleet of e-scooters in Malaysia.

[27 Mar 2024] This month marks an exciting milestone for Beam Mobility as the e-scooter sharing service provider celebrates its 5 year anniversary since its first landing  in Malaysia in 2019.

From the heart of Kuala Lumpur, Bukit Bintang, to now 8 cities and 24 universities across the country, with a fleet of over 5,500 e-scooters, the 2-year COVID-19 pandemic did not hinder Beam’s plan to widen its footprint in Malaysia and beyond, including our neighboring nations of Thailand and Indonesia. During this period, Beam has provided over 2 million convenient, environmentally-friendly rides to Malaysians.

"We are incredibly proud to be celebrating 5 years of micro-mobility operations in Malaysia," said Beam's Country Lead, Lucas Yap. "When we first arrived, we had a vision of making cities more livable by providing a convenient, sustainable transportation option. Half a decade later, it's amazing to see how e-scooters have been embraced by so many Malaysians, not just in the Klang Valley region, but also in outer cities like Melaka, Ipoh and even Miri, Bintulu in Sarawak."

Throughout these 5 years, Beam has also introduced three different types of e-scooters to their fleet, revolutionizing micromobility and continually improving our products and services. The journey began with the Saturn model, followed by the Ninebot, and most recently, the Kuickwheel model, each representing advancements in technology and user experience.

Like many other nations, Malaysia did not dodge its bullet when COVID-19 hit. Beam remained resilient, providing an essential, safe mode of short distance travel to the residents for grocery shopping, or to withdraw cash at their nearby banks, as well as providing job opportunities to the locals through gig economy. Fast forward to today, post-pandemic, or even post-recovery, Beam remains committed to provide job opportunities to locals to ensure smooth fleet operations and maintenance of the e-scooters.

Beam's purple e-scooters have become a common sight on city streets, offering first and last-mile connections to public transport hubs.

"Whether it's a short commute to the office, running errands around town, or just getting some fresh air for fun, we love seeing all the creative ways our Malaysian riders use Beam to ride around their neighborhoods," Yap commented.

As it looks forward to the next 5 years, Beam continues to drive its mission of bringing convenient, green, safe and smart mode of transportation to cities across Malaysia. The company has ambitious plans for further fleet expansions, city expansions, and enhanced services to sustainably improve urban mobility.

"We've come a long way in 5 years, but this is just the beginning for Beam in Malaysia," Yap said. "We're excited to continue our journey of growth while helping to create more connected, eco-friendly cities along the way, providing the first-and-last-mile solution to the busy cities and bringing leisure opportunities to the quieter towns."
