Powering cities’ big moments

Powering cities’ big moments

As cities across Australia and New Zealand host major events throughout the year, data reveals the vital role that shared micromobility can play in supporting these events.

With the influx of visitors and increased street activity, shared micromobility is increasingly being relied upon by cities and event organisers to offer a flexible, scalable solution to support transportation needs.

E-scooters have certainly become a popular mode of transport for residents and visitors in a city travelling during, to and from, major events, with data from recent large events - such as stadium concerts and sporting matches - in Beam's operational cities showcasing their popularity amongst event-goers.

For example, Brisbane played host to The NRL Magic Round in 2023, an iconic event drawing over 130,000 passionate rugby league fans. The challenge lay not just in managing the crowds attending the matches but also in ensuring seamless connectivity between public transport, the event, and accommodations.

Similarly, over in Canberra, the inaugural FLIGHT: Drone SkyShow and Night Markets in January 2024 saw the need for mass travel to-and-from a central location in Canberra’s inner city, with minimising traffic congestion and parking issues as key travel concerns.

The results speak volumes about the impact of Beam's involvement with the NRL and FLIGHT:Drone SkyShow.

DATA FROM BRISBANE'S MAGIC ROUND

  • Throughout the Magic Round weekend, Beam deployed 640 marshal hours, spanning 78 shifts from Friday to Sunday, with an average of 9 marshals active at any given time.
  • With an average NRL daily attendance of 49,035 people, Beam played a pivotal role in facilitating 6,798 trips for 2.3% of event attendees.
  • Over 2,000 trips to the stadium during the NRL were taken on Beam e-scooters daily, with a similar number of riders leaving the stadium post-event on an e-scooter.
  • Data from the NRL demonstrated a nearly even split between riders using e-scooters for first and last mile connections to cars parked further away, bus stops and train stations, and for a direct route from hotels in the CBD and South Bank.

The strategic deployment of vehicles, strong operational planning, and collaboration with the Brisbane City Council not only ensured a hassle-free transportation experience but also contributed to the overall safety and success of The NRL Magic Round.

DATA FROM CANBERRA'S FLIGHT: DRONE SKYSHOW

  • There were over 5500 trips taken, traveling  a total of 11,000 km on Beams by 2500 riders over the 3 day event.
  • The average trip duration increased by 2 minutes, with trips lasting over 13 minutes from Thursday to Saturday during the FLIGHT: Drone SkyShow event. This data indicates that riders not only used Beam for commuting but also for leisurely exploration of the event and its surroundings.
  • The introduction of temporary geofencing for the FLIGHT:Drone SkyShow facilitated a shift in popular parking spots. Elizabeth Terrace emerged as the top parking spot during the event, accommodating over 25% of all trips and indicating the successful alignment of parking availability with event activities.
  • Riders covered 3,500 more kilometers over the event period compared to the week prior, emphasising the widespread use of Beam for both short and extended journeys during FLIGHT:Drone SkyShow.

IN SUMMARY

Beam's seamless integration with various events not only addresses the transportation needs of attendees but also showcases our ability to support local councils and organisations in optimising mobility solutions for large-scale events.

Insights into peak vehicle usage times throughout event periods also provide valuable information for event organisers and local authorities to anticipate and manage event ingress, egress, as well as broader transport patterns throughout the city on major event days.
