BEAM LOVES SAL'S

It’s all about the ingredients at Sal’s Pizza. The restaurant styles itself as New Zealand’s only authentic New York pizza. If you’re a pizza aficionado or just in need of a quick bite, Sal’s offers the pizza pie you need in your life.

We visited the Terrace store, down an alley behind the restaurants of Oxford Terrace. The first things we noticed were the smells of freshly baked dough and the New York diner style. The menu offers all the classics and also ‘legendary’ pizzas inspired by four out of the five New York boroughs: Staten Island, Brooklyn, Manhattan and The Bronx.

We ordered a Pepperoni flavour Classic 18-inch pie. The pizza is served on a raised tray so it doesn’t take up the whole table. An enormous slice of pizza comprised of a hot, crunchy base straight from the oven, topped in a herb and tomato sauce made fresh from vine-ripened Californian tomatoes, pepperoni and stretchy Wisconsin Mozzarella cheese.

New York style pizza originated in New York City in the early 1900s, inspired by the traditional Neapolitan style in Italy, simply topped with tomato sauce and Mozzarella. This sort of pizza has a large hand-tossed base that can be folded in half.

The first Sal’s store in New Zealand opened in Auckland in 2009. Now, five Christchurch stores serve up the pizza from Salvatore Leo’s secret family pizza making recipe. The New York base is made from slow risen dough that is crispy on the outside and springy on the inside. 

Besides pizza, a few other dishes are available. We tried the Buffalo wings, a huge 350 grams of chicken wings in spicy Buffalo sauce made to an original 1964 recipe. The garlic knots were also a popular choice.

A selection of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and New York cheesecake is available for dessert.
